PSCDA President's Message - January
10, 2008
By Roger Howson, Claims Dispute Resolution
START 2008 WITH PSCDA!
New Year's is one of my favorite holidays of the year (in
addition to
all of the other holidays), because it gives us a clean slate
for
starting over with new hope and anticipation. One of my younger
brothers started his 2008 New Year's Day off by having a
heart attack.
You can only imagine the dramatic change in HIS motivations,
expectations, and objectives for this coming year.
For those of us who don't require a heart attack as motivation
for
positive change, we're hoping that the PSCDA Meeting on Thursday,
January 10th provides a more benign opportunity to start
this year off
right. If you haven't been on the PSCDA website lately let
me invite
you to learn more about Jane Field's exciting topic for Thursday
night: Take note of the acronyms: O*Net, SOC, and NAICS and
add to
these the website Workforce Explorer. There's a new language
coming to
the fore, and a new stream of labor market resources available
for
workforce professionals.
Jane Field, labor market analyst and nationally recognized
writer on
labor market information will answer your questions; explain
this
language, these tools and how they compliment each other
at the
January meeting. Jane has been the LMI Trainer with Labor
Market and
Economic Analysis, Employment Security for the past decade.
She has
received a number of national awards from such groups as
the National
Association of State Workforce Agencies (NASWA) and the International
Association of Workforce Professionals (IAWP) for publications
such as
the Handbook for the Sidewalk Economist, Jobs for the Sidewalk
Economist, and Entry Points. She has been
featured on the U.S. DOL O*Net Knowledge website.
Jane holds two undergraduate degrees: one in Speech from
the
University of Washington, and another in Political Economy
from The
Evergreen State College, and a Masters degree in Education
from
California State University at Los Angeles.
We look forward to starting off 2008 by reconnecting with
all of our
members, and we're especially excited to meet new attendees
checking
us out for the first (or second) time.
BTW, my brother is doing fine. It's amazing that he can
suffer a
heart attack on a Tuesday morning, be operated on by Wednesday
afternoon, be released on Thursday night, and be back to
work on the
following Monday! Take care, be well, and stay in touch.
Also, Virginia Stout wrote us the following message to let
us know why
she wont make it to our first meeting of 2008. She wrote
the
following:
I'll think of you all from the beach in southern Peru, almost
to
Chile. We drive thru the Atacama Desert on the way from Arequipa.
The
Atacama Desert is supposedly the driest place on earth.
Happy New Year to all --- Virginia
Ditto for a Happy New Year,
Roger Howson,
President, PSCDA
