PSCDA May Speaker

Topic: The Brain-Voice™ Connection...Becoming More Effective Speakers and Interviewees

Presenter: Anna Bernstein

Location: Community Center, Mercer Island, WA (For directions, click here)

Anna Bernstein, former New York singing coach and a speaking coach since 1997, will share numerous ideas on how we and our clients can become more effective speakers and interviewees. While working in New York City, Anna realized she could adapt her singing techniques to the speaking voice and combine those techniques with research on how the brain influences the voice and our language choices.

Anna will teach us how to breathe using a special technique for inhaling. This inhalation supports your voice and creates a resonant sound that carries your communications with confidence.

Anna also will address issues that will help both career coaches and their clients, including:

1. The Brain-Voice Connection™: understanding how your brain controls everything your voice does and trusting your brain to provide what you need, whether it's pitch, volume, intonation or projection;

2. The Three Ones™: one breath, one topic, one sentence. This helps focus people to speak clearly about one thing at a time and then pause to allow the listener to take it in (this will be especially helpful for interviewees);

3. Speaking from the listener's perspective: instead of worrying about how we sound, it's essential to understand how we are heard. The brain of the listener is wired a specific way to hear us. Anna will demonstrate how to use this knowledge to make yourself heard and help the listener focus on your message;

4. Concepts that are relevant to interviewing will be covered and will ensure the audience understands how to apply them to job interviews. Participants will also learn how to coach their clients on these techniques.

Anna can be contacted at anna@speakingmatters.net, 206-216-4650. Visit her website at

This meeting will be followed by an interactive discussion regarding the concepts presented by Anna.
